Why Memory Care Would Benefit a Senior with Cancer

Mary and Donald had been taking care of her elderly mother for quite some time. She had been diagnosed with cancer more than eight years earlier and fought a valiant fight. Now, though, the cancer is considered incurable, but with regular chemo treatments she is able to keep it from advancing, at least for now.

However, the chemotherapy treatments are taking a toll on her mind, especially her memory. She has difficulty keeping track of things, and that includes her prescription medications and pain management meds. There are days — especially for the first two weeks after the treatments — where she can barely remember things a couple of minutes after they are said or happen.

Mary and Donald were spending considerable time and energy looking after her. Unfortunately, Mary’s mother had no intention of moving from her home, the place she had shared with Mary’s father for over four decades. She didn’t want to move. Mary and Donald realized, at least at this stage in the game, they weren’t going to be able to force her, nor did they want to try.

Yet, the struggle was growing tougher. Mary’s mother was getting weaker from spending most of her days in bed, unmotivated to get out and move around and, more pressing, worrying that she wouldn’t be able to remember anything and preferred to hold up in her room.

How could memory care assisted living make a difference?

For Mary and Donald, they don’t have any experience helping someone with memory-related challenges. They are learning as they go. For that, it is a noble effort, but they also realize just how limited they are in the assistance they can provide.

For somebody dealing with regular chemotherapy treatments, who may not be looking at a curable form of cancer, it means a continual pattern of treatments, memory loss, pain, and then enjoying perhaps a week or two of relative peace and comfort. Unfortunately, the chemo treatments can leave memory loss a more permanent condition to consider.

As for memory care assisted living, Mary’s mother would be surrounded by experienced individuals who would know the best strategies to help those residents in their care. Mary’s mother would be surrounded by people her own age, perhaps be able to play games, have conversations, and enjoy life a little more than just sitting around watching TV by herself.

When it comes to helping somebody in this situation, Mary and Donald realized they didn’t have the necessary experience or knowledge to care for Mary’s mother. Even though she didn’t want to move, focusing on the benefits a memory care facility offers might just help her realize that quality of life could improve dramatically by choosing assisted living for her elder care.
