Mary and Donald had been taking care of her elderly mother for quite some time. She had been diagnosed with cancer more than eight years earlier and fought a valiant fight. Now, though, the cancer is considered incurable, but with regular chemo treatments she is able to keep it from advancing, at least for now.
However, the chemotherapy treatments are taking a toll on her mind, especially her memory. She has difficulty keeping track of things, and that includes her prescription medications and pain management meds. There are days — especially for the first two weeks after the treatments — where she can barely remember things a couple of minutes after they are said or happen.
Mary and Donald were spending considerable time and energy looking after her.
